Where else would Boston's most daring companies practice their craft?
The Spaces: Leland Center, Mills Gallery, Cyclorama, Black Box Theatre
The Boston Center for the Arts' four resident theater companies--the Speakeasy Stage Company, the Theater Offensive, the Sugan Theatre Company and the Pilgrim Theater--perform here and in the smaller Black Box Theater.
In addition, the two theaters host about six other theater companies every year. The result is an eclectic mix of high-quality, contemporary theater, often on the cutting edge. Two of the resident companies have unique missions: Sugan focuses on Irish plays while the Theater Offensive presents gay and lesbian works.

The Boston Conservatory surges forward with its mission of providing music, dance and theater students with a place to learn and a venue in which to perform.
This is the oldest conservatory in Boston, founded in 1867 by teacher, violinist and composer Julius Eichberg. The venues consist of three separate spaces. The Boston Conservatory Theater, located at 31 Hemenway St, was built in the 1940s. Major productions--concerts, operas, musicals and dance--are mounted here. It has good acoustics, lighting and comfortable seats.
Smaller-scale presentations--chamber music concerts, duets and the like--are staged in either the 50-seat Concert Room or the 100-seat Seully Hall (est. 1901), both located in the school's main building. The annual Boston Conservatory Performance Series, a variety of large dance, theater, musical and orchestra performances, is held between September and April in either Seully Hall or the main theater.
The dance division is the oldest degree-granting dance department in North America and is perpetually ranked among the very best in comparison to similar American undergraduate programs. The musical theater division deserves those same accolades--in fact, the students have given the New England premieres of Broadway shows of composers such as Stephen Sondheim and Henry Krieger.
The music division draws many of its faculty from Boston's finest performance groups, including the BSO and the Boston Pops.

Call the above number and you get hooked up to both the Lansdowne Street Playhouse box office and the booking headquarters for the Lansdowne Street Music Hall (formerly Mama Kin).
The 250-seat Playhouse and Music Hall are joined at the hip. Both are black and boxy and smoky and rock-'n'-rolly. Live theater here is, for the most part, avant-garde, Emperor's New Clothes stuff. And the dancing is hip, Friday through Sunday nights.
If you wanna be cool, clap and dance. Or else go next door for the live music. Make sure you know the rules: No sneakers, jeans or baseball hats.
