The Mother Church -- Welcoming Everyone!
The First Church of Christ, Scientist--with its Church, administration, and publishing buildings on a 14-acre site--serves not only as a local place of worship, but also as the international headquarters for the Church's worldwide activities. Founder Mary Baker Eddy discovered and established a Bible-based system of Christian healing, explained in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, first published in 1875. The Church responds to public interest in Mrs. Eddy's ideas, publishes The Christian Science Monitor and numerous magazines and books on Christian Science, and supports public Christian Science Reading Rooms and more than 2000 churches worldwide.
The First Church of Christ, Scientist's presence in the Fenway began with building the original Mother Church in 1894. In addition to regular religious services and public tours, neighbors and visitors can also enjoy occasional organ recitals, the family-oriented activities the Church sponsors each year for Boston's First Night, and the fountain on the plaza ("brick beach") each spring, summer, and fall. |
