Except for the food court below, this third-floor space in the Longwood Galleria is surrounded by incentives to stay healthy. There is Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, and the entire Longwood medical complex, where many of the world's finest doctors try to revitalize body parts lost to neglect. The gym is spacious and clean, with gray (why are they all gray?) carpet and a clientele that looks like it has read all of the latest epidemiological studies. For those who work in the area, it can't be beat.

If you've ever wondered where the set designers for the Rocky movies took their inspiration, wonder no more. This Gold's Gym, one of 491 nationwide, attracts a serious body-building crowd. Well, a platoon really -- the guys who come here don't do anything casually. Newbies to the fitness world might be more comfortable elsewhere and would be advised to take a decade or so to work their way up to Gold's. The knowledgeable staff here can answer your training questions if you have the courage to ask. Gold's isn't for everyone, but for serious weight trainers, it's a gold mine.

PARTY TIME: Corporate parties available on request and birthday party specials.
Part candlepin bowling alley, part pool hall and part video arcade, this is one-stop shopping for a game fix. Nominated for Best Bowling Alley because this longtime fun spot from an earlier era has kept up with the times in high style. (High-tech "mystic" bowling anyone?)
Nominated for Best Place For Family Fun because this is a playroom extraordinaire.
Specials: Bowl half price on Sunday 12pm-3pm.
Special per-hour pool hall rates Monday-Thursday, 3pm-6pm.
Ladies Night in the pool hall Monday and Tuesday, 7pm-11pm, just $6 per hour.
Before the mammoth Boston Billiard Club and Jillian's hit town several years ago, this was the only place to play pool in Kenmore Square. There are 20 candlepin lanes and 11 pool tables. The video games vary from older handgun games to newer one-on-one fighters, but all are in very good shape.
Tucked underneath Fenway Park, Ryan used to be one of the city's dinosaurs; but it's not so old-fashioned anymore. Overhauled and modernized in recent years, Ryan's trying to keep pace with the newer pool halls and alleys around town.
Disco Bowling: The coolest addition is "Mystic" bowling (a.k.a. "glow" or "cosmic" bowling). But instead of pins and balls that glow in the dark, this version features laser lights, hazy smoke and a rocking sound system that combine to create a disco-like atmosphere. It starts every Friday and Saturday at 9:30pm.
